I want to host my Access2003 .mdb database on the internet from my

iDisk or the free space that we get from our ISP. I think I'm doing

everything correctly but it's not working.

The help says Data Access Pages only works with IIS. Is this typical MS

Support CYA, or is there some real technical reason/limitation why this

cannot be made to work on other webservers?

I presume that the iDisk is a MacOS/Unix/Linux machine. No idea what my ISP

is using.

I can access the iDisk via WebDAV over the internet. Other pages work fine

on the iDisk.

No matter what I change my connection string to, when I browse the page I

get the errors:

"Data Provider could not be initialized"

and

"Not a valid file name"

I¹m pretty sure this isn¹t working due to some kind of permissions issues,

but I have no idea what to do about it.

I have gotten the page to work from my iDisk, but ONLY if I¹m connected to

my iDisk via WebDav. From machines that aren¹t connected to my iDisk, it

doesn¹t work, and I DON¹T want to hand out the password to my iDisk....

Is there a way to make this work without handing out the password to my

iDisk?

Will this truly ONLY work with IIS? Any ideas on making it work from my

iDisk or my ISP's webspace?

Sorry but you cannot do that.

The JET OLEDB driver doesn't work over the internet (or WAN) so unless you

are using some other transport layer such as a VPN or RDS, you cannot open

an Access database over the internet; hence DAPs will work only on your

local machine or over a local LAN.

If you want to edit an Access database over the internet, you must use

another technology like ASP.NET or PHP or whatever but not DAP.

(If you could have access to an instance of SQL-Server, you could use DAP to

access it but even then, you would have potential problems with firewalls

and proxies so even in this case, using DAP would not be a wise choice.)
