Does anyone have ideas on how we can do this? 
 
The reason we need to do this is we have a small production shop (< 20 
 
people) and it would not make business sense to put a PC at each work area. 
 
Right now time is recorded on a production order on paper, at the end of the 
 
week the time is entered in a route card journal and then posted. However we 
 
cannot post to a finished production order. The production orders need to be 
 
reported as finished so they can be shipped before the end of the week. 
 
I thought about changing them to in process, posting the time then changing 
 
them to report as finished. However this will mess up inventory and shipments.

You can post route card journals after a production order was reported as finished without any 
 
problems. This becomes impossible only after the production is ended. 
 
The only thing you should pay attention to, is the reporting of quantity for the last operation, so 
 
you don't get any additional quantity reported finished. 
 
With reporting of times you'll have no problems.
