Sorry to bother you guys again.

I have quite a bizarre problem with a dell poweredge 2500 server, running

windows 2000. The initial problem was that the system rebooted after the "NT

Authority System" initiated a shutdown (status code 128, the thing where it

counts down fron 60 seconds and cant be stopped) after this when attempting

to boot we got the Blue "STOP"

This series of events happened when a Dell powervault tape drive was

replaced with a newer model. My colleague then put back the old tape drive

exactly as it was, but the system still would not boot, however this time the

error was (and still is), "Windows 2000 could not start because the following

file is missing or corrupt:<windows 2000 root> \system32\ntoskrnl.exeplease

reinstall a copy of the above file"

I tried fixing it using the windows repair console, but it didn’t work,

I have now done a parallel install of win 2000 on a different partition and

it boots ok to this, but when I browse the system on “C:” I find that there

are files missing from WINNT and that WINNT\SYSTEM32 is a completely empty

folder!

Also I found that if I run CHKDSK it causes a blue STOP screen. I suspect

there may have been a virus,as its doing such strange things, but cant rule

out hard drive failure. Any Ideas?

PS I have searched through old backups and found a copy of “system32” is it

wise to copy this to c:\winnt and try to boot?

I know the obvious fix is to Reinstall the operating sysyem, but we have no

useable backups, and im told it would be a nightmare to re-setup the domain

and mailboxes etc and I hope there might be a way of getting the existing

installation working.

Regards

Andrew

I'd call Microsoft support for this. Any way you look at it, it's a good

size mess, and it can't hurt to have someone looking over your shoulder when

you fix it.
