8/7/2006 12:34:25 PM    Problems with filenames on protected server
Hi Everyone,

now i've got a real weird problem. The scenario is a little bit complex, but

i hope i describe everything needed to reproduce this one.

We have a Webserver under W2k3 (incl. every patch available through WSUS).

On this machine exists an FTP Server. Within this server, there are user

home directories, which exist as real path within the filesystem (e.g.

d:\web\ftp\users\someuser). Now i have one account which also gets access to

some www directory (e.g. d:\web\www\somedir). To implement this i set up a

junction point within the someuser dir which shows to somedir. So the ftp

user can logon and change into the subfolder somedir and can see everything

as if he would directly access this directory under wwwroot. He can (as it's

permitted) read, write, add and delete as wanted and till now everything

works very well.

On this webserver i installed the DPM Agent and i told him to protect the

folder d:\web. Everything was installed correctly and within DPM Server

everything looks ok. But if i now connect myself over FTP to the web server

and put a file through that junction point on the server, the file will be

created with the whole name in uppercase! So i take the file 'testfile.txt'

with some random content and copy it on the server. If i now take a look at

this filename (no matter if over FTP or directly with explorer on that

machine) it will appear as 'TESTFILE.TXT'.

At next i just go into DPM Manager, selected the protected server and delete

all protection groups and even the Agent. After that a restart wasn't needed

and now the file will appear as 'testfile.txt'. As last step i just

installed the DPM Agent again and restarted the server (DPM Manager says

this is needed). An upload right now makes no problem, the file appears in

lowercase. But as last step i create a protection group and add the folder

d:\web to it. I set the times, when the backup should start and click on the

finish button. A new window appears and shows the steps which are taken (e.

g. creating the DPM Partition for this group). And if i'm going to upload

right after this step my file through ftp it will appear in UPPERCASE.

The weird thing now is, when i upload some file not into the junction point,

but instead into a real folder under someuser it appears as intended. Just

in the case i create a file through ftp within a junction point on a DPM

protected folder i'm running into these problems. So what's going on here?

For now i found my solution by just removing the junction point and instead

using an alias within my FTP server. So for the ftp users there are no

changes, but it seems to be a little problem here within windows.

Best regards,

Oliver Münchow

Oliver - I doubt if we've even tried this scenario at our end. It definitely

seems very weird as DPM doesn't change the data on the production server in

any way. I'm wondering if this is because of some other setting that is

getting modified.

I'll need some time to investigate this and ask folks within my team and in

core file system team for help. I'll post back as soon as I find some info

on this. Thanks for catching this!

Thanks,

Thanks Oliver, that is very interesting!!

I'd love to attempt to reproduce it, although since server admin isn't my

strong point... I'd have to ask you how to create a junction point

forwarding to a different folder?

Hi Joseph,

making a junction point right within XP and 2k3 is quite difficult, but with

this little tool, it's easy as copying a folder per drag and drop:

http://www.wintotal.de/yad/index.php?rb=42&id=2400

After installation, just move one folder by right click drag and drop and in

the context menu a new point 'create junction point' appears. Also junction

points are identifiable by the green link symbol in the lower left corner.

This is just one example of some available tools enabling the easy way of

creating junction points and hardlinks. To find some other of this tools

(maybe in other languages), just ask your local search engine about 'ntfs

link' and you'll get some of them.

Hi Karandepp,

thanks that you'll gonna check this out. The only part in my test chain i

didn't change is my FTP Server. So maybe the problem lies there, but

actually i can't image why it should create the file in uppercase only when

DPM Agent was configured. So if you try to test it, maybe you can also try

if the ftp server is guilty. Actually i'm using FileZilla 0.9.18.
