Using DIS 2006, I often like to save a modified version of a photo over the

original. Suddenly I can no longer do that and when I try, I get an error

message.

I had the same problem before and found the solution here but cannot seem to

find it now. I can us Save As but most of the time I prefer not to. TerryS

Hi John,

I understand others concerns about "messing with the original" but my

process works for me.

The message is, "Cannot save to.." and cites the path to the original. It's

likely a protection against "messing with the original" but there is a menu

item that checked will permit it.

The only way to do that would be to "save as" and select PNG+. Do not use

ordinary png or the layers will be flattened and you will permanently change

the original. PNG+ is DIS native format at will retain the layers so you

can alter it later if you like.

I would recommend NEVER using the original. Instead, open the original then

go to Edit/Duplicate Whole Project.. A new file will open with a copy of

the original. Close off the original so you don't accidentally alter it

permanently. Now work on the duplicate. You can "copy and paste" another

on top to alter as you please. Save at PNG+.

John,

The originals are on a different drive than the DIS but I've tried images on

the same drive/partition and the result is the same.

I can open, edit and save files with MS Paint with no trouble.

I tried files from various drives and partitions and they all work the same

with DIS.

I remember that I more or less stumbled on the "fix" previously. It was a

menu and I had to check a box that permitted saving back to the original

file. I don't recall where or how I found it as I've slept since then.....

Appreciate any help you may offer.

No. What I'm saying is below. I get an error message (Window) that says,

"Cannot save to..." and cites the path to the original. It then opens a

window that will permit "Save As"

If I open a photo, alter it and then go to File/Save it just saves it as the

altered image. The original is permanently altered. Are you saying

File/Save is grayed out?

If you go ahead with "save as" will it then allow you to save over the

original? If not you can just add an "a" or "1" to the end of the filename.

Why not just do that if it gets the result you want? Just a

thought........are you trying to save to a removable device? or is the

original file somehow write protected? Otherwise all I can suggest is

uninstalling and reinstalling to see it if solves the problem.
