FLASH: Fix for Windows Vista

Details of a fix for Adobe Flash nonperformance on Windows Vista.

This is a short one, but I'm putting it up since it seems to be a common issue, and I was glad to find a fix:

Lots of people (me included) have been complaining that Flash (such as for viewing videos on Youtube.com) doesn't work. You go and install Flash again (as prompted) and when you go back to view the video it's like you haven't done anything -- no Flash.

Here's the fix:

Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Macromed\Flash

Then right-click over both 'Flash9b.ocx' and 'FlashUtil9b.exe', and choose Properties.

In Properties choose the "Security" tab. Click on the "Everyone" account (or add it if it isn't there), and the button called "Edit" and then check the box called "Full Control", click "Apply" and do the same with your own Windows local account name.

Once you have done this for both files, run the FlashUtil9b.exe and it should install and update and tell you to restart. Do so and you should now find that YouTube and other sites that use Flash now work.

Flash: Fix for Vista
Penny Gerst replied to Peter Bromberg at Thursday, October 09, 2008 9:18 AM

Dear Peter,

Thank you so much for caring enough to post this solution!  Seriously, I am no techy; however, being the office manager, secretary, IT department, etc. I have become very techno sauvy.  But, having to install flash on vista computers as well as new printer drivers, it has been a challenge.  There are such incompatibility issues that you don't know a program is not going to work, until it actually quits working, or nevers works after installation; which is what happened after I installed Adobe flash version 9.

So thanks to Google, I was able to find you and your solution!!

It is wonderful that you share your knowledge to help the masses know what you know :o)

Thank You

Sincerely,

Penny J Gerst
