System: WinXP sp2(32bit),xml4.0,xml6.0 I noticed during a recent maintenance survey of my update history that kb936181 has been downloaded and installed daily for the last several weeks. Attempt to manually install produced same results... could not get update site to recognize that the "successful" installation was NOT! Did a google to find many others reporting same problems. I noticed during a recent maintenance survey of my update history that kb936181 has been downloaded and installed daily for the last several weeks.  Attempt to manually install produced same results... could not get update site to recognize that the "successful" installation was NOT!

Did a google to find many others reporting same problems.  The suggested solutions range widely, mostly w/ guesswork and trial & error.  M$ offers little help.

My find: XML parser 4.0 and 6.0 reside side by side.  More than co-incidental that kb936181 (update to xml4.0) supplied same day as kb933579 (update to xml6.0).  For some unknown reason, xml4.0 does not install completely, but is registered, so that M$ Update sees it as uninstalled, but cannot install.... however reports a "successful" installation!!

I used control panel add/remove, selected XML4.0, "Change", and noted under "Modify" a 0Kb space requirement.  Chose a "Repair" attempt that did not solve problem, and then "Remove", followed by re-install from Update site, which did.  Note:  this was the only time I received a "Restart?" prompt!

Main point:  There are untold number of users that have this problem and do not know it, not to mention many who don't know how to fix it.  If you use the auto update feature, make sure you view your install history.  If you find kb936181 "successfully" installed repeatedly, IT ISN'T!!  This leaves you vulnerable to a hack that can hijack your system.

Also:  I followed M$ directions using MsiExec.exe and it removed kb927978, but did not resolve this issue until I removed and re-installed xml4.0.
